MIA’S MISSION

Mia Yamamoto, born in a WWII incarceration camp, came out as transgender at the age of 60 after a 20-year legal career. Now at age 78, she champions racial issues and LGBTQ visibility. Rooted in L.A., she”s relentless in her mission to unite communities of color against racism, embodying her deep ties to the city.

Jireh is a queer Asian American writer and filmmaker born and raised in the San Gabriel Valley. Their words are published in The Guardian, The Washington Post, Teen Vogue, NPR, The L.A. Times, The Huffington Post, and more. They co-direct the Asian American Journalists Association LGBTQIA+ affinity group.

This year, VAFF 2023 FESTIVAL, screening programs in person and virtual will be organized into various series in order to better highlight the diverse content in our festival. These Series include Spotlight Series, Documentary Features Series, Narrative Features Series, Westcoast Shorts Series, Canadian Shorts Series, International Short Series, Animation Series, VAFF Industry Insight Series and Special Events.
