Beginning my extensive animation career on the groundbreaking Reboot, the world’s first CG animated television series, I went on to direct over 18 feature-length animated movies and countless hours of streaming content for Netflix, Amazon Prime, Sony, Mattel, Hasbro, eOne, SpinMaster and Skybound Entertainment.
My notable directing credits include helming The Last Kids on Earth for Netflix which won a Daytime Emmy Award for Outstanding Special Class Animated Program and a Leo Award for Best Director; The CG animated series Super Dinosaur, based on the hit comic book by Robert Kirkman which I received a nomination for Best Director at the Canadian Screen Awards and many popular Barbie, Hot Wheels and Max Steel animated features including The Transformers: Beast Machines series that earned an Elan and many Leo nominations for Best Direction.
My love for emotional and visually striking storytelling fuels my passion for exploring new and creative animation expressions by utilizing innovative techniques in classic keyframing and photo-realistic performance capture to move viewers that no other medium can.
Justin Lee
A passionate CG and Traditional Hand-drawn animator with experience in film, television, commercials and music videos. Experienced Lead Animator and Animation Supervisor/Director.
I hope to keep working on exciting projects with great people and continue to be pushed as an animator, artist and storyteller.
Julie Nguyen
Julie has nearly 20 years of experience working in children’s animation production. She has a deep understanding and knowledge of the 2D animation pipeline from front-end to back-end, and has worked her way up from PA to Line Producer throughout her career. She has implemented and established show pipelines and workflows, training crew on tracking software, processes and procedures.
Julie is a detail oriented self starter who thrives on organizing, scheduling and planning. Efficiency and problem solving have always been her driving force. Julie is a quick learner in a fast paced environment and is adaptable to any new production.
She graduated with honours from Humber College studying Film & Television Production majoring in cinematography, post audio and post sound.
In her final year of college, her career in animation began when she interned at Elliott Animation as a Production Assistant on Disney’s animated series Yin Yang Yo. From there she earned a permanent position as a Voice Record’s Coordinator on Fresh TV’s hit animated series 6TEEN & Total Drama Island. Then she later joined the creative team at Fresh TV as their Executive Assistant and became Office Manager for the studio.
Julie moved back to the production floor as a coordinator at Guru Studios on the Netflix Original Series and fashion doll franchise Ever After High for Mattel. She also became Script & Records Coordinator for the Netflix Pre-school series True and the Rainbow Kingdom. She then worked on the Oscar, Golden Globe nominated and Annie Award winning film The Breadwinner.
Furthering her career, she transitioned to the role of Assistant Production Manager at Yowza Animation for the Emmy Nominated Nickelodeon series Welcome to the Wayne.
Julie was previously employed at Brown Bag Films/9Story Media as Production Manager on the TV series Nature Cat and Let’s Go Luna for PBS. She was also promoted to Line Producer on Storybots Answer Time for Netflix.
Currently Julie is Line Producing for a 2D preschool series for PBS at Atomic Cartoons in Vancouver, BC.
In her free time Julie keeps herself busy by taking on any creative, fitness or outdoor adventure that comes her way.

This year, VAFF 2023 FESTIVAL, screening programs in person and virtual will be organized into various series in order to better highlight the diverse content in our festival. These Series include Spotlight Series, Documentary Features Series, Narrative Features Series, Westcoast Shorts Series, Canadian Shorts Series, International Short Series, Animation Series, VAFF Industry Insight Series and Special Events.
